Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters
A recent study reveals that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such drugs need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle management.
